Don't plan. Just start!

Make sure to stay until the end to hear the story of one of my clients who previously had this problem.

 

Picture this: You pull your favorite outfit out of the closet, put it on, and... wait a minute. Didn't this outfit use to look way better? It doesn't fit at all! Now what!?

You probably stop and make a plan to lose weight. You start making a grocery list. You start Googling the best fat loss workouts. You think about all the little details that will get you from where you are now to where you want to be. You may even tell a friend or family member about the new journey you're embarking on.


What if I told you this was not only the wrong thing to do but that it will even harm your progress?


Studies show those who take the time to plan and tell others about the changes they're going to make are actually less likely to make those changes. [1] Thinking and talking about change is actually enough to satisfy the portion of our brain that desires the change, so the change never gets made. [2] 

What do we do then? Just start! It's as simple as that. If you feel the urge to start lifting weights, just do it. If you feel the desire to start doing cardio, just do it. If you feel the need to start tracking your intake more closely, just do it. Don't worry about the details. Doing something is infinitely better than doing nothing

If you're a like me and are ultra type A, "just do it" can be hard advice to follow. Like me, you may feel the need to make sure what you're doing is "the best" thing to do. If this is the case, I have some reassuring news for you. If you're a beginner, training in any capacity is such a large stimulus for change in the body that as long as you're making your training sessions challenging, the details don't matter all that much.

 
 

If you want a coach to ensure you're lifting weights safely, that's understandable. Just make sure you hire one quickly before your urge to make a change passes. Get some wins under your belt by actually making it to the gym. Get some mental momentum going so that you keep up your new habit.

You don't have to hire Treadaway Training but whoever you hire, make sure to ask about how they ensure you get long-term results, not just short-term success.

My First Client

Like most business owners, my first client was none other than my momma. Before training with me, she had often talked about getting in shape and even made plans to get in shape but ultimately never ended up where she wanted to be. One day while I was at their house, she mentioned wanting to go to the gym and without hesitation, I said, "Let's go!" I hopped up, pushed her towards her room and told her to change clothes while standing outside her door pestering her to hurry. We then loaded up in my truck and went to the gym where I showed her some basic movements. She then hired me to train her and has been regularly going to the gym for two years now. Here are the before and after pictures of her first four months of training:
