What results should you expect when you start a muscle building program?

You’ve started a brand new workout program and you’re ready to start seeing results. You may also be a little bit nervous and not know what to expect. That's why I'm writing this post, describing what will likely happen and what you should expect. I don’t want you to be like the majority who get caught off guard during their journey and end up quitting out of frustration.

I wrote a similar article last week explaining what results to expect when you start a fat loss program. Click here to check that out.

First Things First

The first couple of weeks are all about learning to build habits. Don't stress when you don't see results immediately. The results will come, but at this point, simply focus on completing your workouts, tracking the weight you’re lifting, and learning to accurately track your intake.

Some people may master these new habits immediately and some may take a couple of weeks. The key here is to realize that you’re building new habits. Messing up is normal. It’s part of the process, so don't be hard on yourself. When you mess up, just shrug it off and try again.

Early Results

As you get into weeks 2 and 3, you'll likely start to see some cool things happen. You'll start to be more confident in your ability to complete the workouts and hit your nutrition targets. You probably won't see results in the mirror yet, but now that you've performed all of the workouts multiple times, the exercises will start to feel more fluid. You will begin to get stronger and be able to lift heavier weights, which will lead to the muscle growth you’re looking for.

The “Aha” Moment

Between 8 - 12 weeks is when the "Aha!" moment happens. You will begin to see noticeable muscle growth. It's possible and even likely that other people will have noticed your progress already, but you see yourself so often in the mirror that you won’t be able to tell the difference immediately.

Once you get to this point, you’re hooked. There’s nothing quite like the feeling of accomplishment when you look in the mirror and see the results of all your hard work.

Remember, be patient. Muscle growth takes longer than fat loss. If you’re following a good plan and put in work, the results will come.

Hopefully this post helps you set your expectations and prevents you from being caught off guard. If you have questions, let me know and I’ll try to write a post answering them in the future!
