Supplements

Supplements: Secret Solution or Budget Buster?

If you don't already know how I am going to answer the above question, I caught you. You definitely didn't read my training philosophy. It's okay, I forgive you. But since you're here now, I will give you the answer. For those of you who have read my training philosophy, I will elaborate further.

The first thing I'll do is give you the short answer. There is no "secret solution". I'm sorry to break the news to you. Most supplements are a waste of money. I found out the hard way like most others. Upon embarking on the journey of my new-found love of training, I started researching (by researching I mean reading magazine ads and internet articles) these wonderful supplements and because I was new to working out, I was gaining muscle very quickly (beginner-gains brah). This further perpetuated my idea that supplements were vital to my success at weightlifting.

Unfortunately, beginner gains, like all good things in life, came to an end. After a lot of denial and frantically searching for different supplements to boost my gym progress, I finally came to the realization that maybe supplements weren't the answer. At that point I was about 2 years into my training career and had came to the conclusion that nutrition must be the answer.

Side note: Supplements are named supplements for a reason. They are to used in addition to proper nutrition. They, wait for it, supplement your diet. It took me 2 years to figure that one out. It's okay. We can't all be smart.

Okay, I'm done slamming supplements. If you'll notice, at the beginning, I did say that most supplements are a waste of money. This means not all supplements are a waste of money. Some supplements can be advantageous to your training and/or general well-being. But you'll have to wait until my next post to learn what those are. ;)
